Things that can influence calcium absorption

Some diseases may affect your body’s ability to absorb calcium. If this happens, it is very important to make sure that you consume enough calcium every day.

In some cases, your doctor may even prescribe you more calcium supplement than what is generally prescribed. This is to ensure that your body absorbs as much calcium as possible. Some diseases may limit your body’s ability to absorb calcium

Here is a list of conditions that may influence your body’s ability to absorb calcium (both from food and calcium supplements):

  • Celiac disease where the inflammation of the intestine reduces the absorption of calcium.
  • Lactose intolerance. Calcium is generally absorbed normally; however, most people that are lactose intolerant avoid milk products and their consumption of calcium containing products is often too low.
  • Surgical bypass for obesity. In many cases, part of the small intestine is removed or bypassed. Since it is the greatest site for calcium absorption, the body is often not able to absorb enough calcium, even if the person consumes the right amount of calcium. Increasing the amount of calcium consumed often helps.
